Aous “Alex” Abdo: New Career as a Lead Data Scientist
With a PhD in physics, Aous “Alex” Abdo was actively looking to strengthen his analytical skills in data science. For the past 12 years, he was working as a scientist and researcher for various stressful roles in the Department of Energy, NASA, Department of Defense and several universities across the US.
He was searching for a solution online and came across a tweet from Coursera for the Data Science Specialization. He immediately enrolled. Throughout the courses, he was able to sharpen knowledge he previously had but also got exposed to a variety of new techniques and skills such as: best practices of obtaining and cleaning data in preparation for exploratory data analysis, understanding trends in the data through statistical inferences, and other tricks to better utilize the open source statistical language R.
After completing the Specialization, he listed his credentials on his online profiles and was contacted by a number of recruiters for interviews in data science. With the content from the Specialization fresh on his mind, he was able to tackle challenging questions directed at him head on. Alex now has a new job as a Lead Data Scientist at HP. He is using skills from the Specialization on a daily basis in his new role. You can connect with him @aousabdo.

Build Knowledge and Situational Awareness on Global Health
|
This guest post is written by Dr. Jay Lemery, M.D., professor of University of Colorado and Cathy Beuten, introducing the new course “Foundations for Global Health Responders starting May 4th. |
In 2010, a devastating earthquake hit the Haitian capital of Port au Prince—one of the most vulnerable cities on Earth. More than 200,000 Haitians were killed and many more severely injured and left homeless. Thousands of well-meaning humanitarian responders flooded the country trying to pitch in, yet many of them were unprepared and were more of a hindrance than a help.
Haiti’s proximity to the North American mainland made it easy for samaritans to arrive quickly and in large numbers. Unfortunately, these good intentions often impeded relief efforts. For example a valuable US helicopter spent 18 percent of its flight operations searching for lost humanitarian responders who were ill-prepared to take care of themselves rather than medavac’ing earthquake victims or delivering food and medical supplies.
Global health workers and volunteers, such as those in Haiti, are often exposed to unfamiliar situations for which they are unprepared. What should have been a net positive to a precarious relief effort in Haiti was in fact a drain on already precious and desperately needed resources. To provide participants from all walks of life with competencies in global health care, Dr. Jay Lemery, of the University of Colorado, is helping learners around the world better contextualize experiences, optimize self-reliance and situational awareness.
His course, the Foundations for Global Health Responders, is not about disaster response. Instead, we discuss responsible engagement and provide foundational knowledge to be a meaningful participant in the world of global health. Lemery and his colleagues are also offering follow-up in-person hands-on workshops offered at locations around the world for learners wishing to be certified as Global Health Responders through the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

Coursera's Campus Ambassadors Spread Knowledge
Just over a year ago, Coursera teamed up with Guokr.com—China’s top community of online learners—to launch the MOOC Ambassador program. The program brings together some of China’s most committed learners, who work to spread knowledge about online learning through college campus events, meet-ups, online forums, and other channels.
Here are a few stories from our incredible ambassadors:
Sunny Fung, Fudan University
As a high school student, Sunny Fung spent more time reading about history and sociology than studying for China’s notoriously consuming college entrance exam, the gaokao. Despite his contrarian stance—and a low gaokao score—Sunny nabbed a slot in one of China’s top schools, Fudan University, which offered him special admission.
But even in college, Sunny found that his intellectual interests shifting outside the boundaries of his formal course of study. Hungry for more, Sunny scoured the web and found Coursera. Inspired by what he saw, Sunny founded Fudan University’s MOOC Association. At the start, the group hosted discussion groups and seminars with the instructors of Fudan’s first Coursera courses. But Sunny wanted to do more.
During Fudan’s winter vacation, Sunny and a handful of MOOC Association collaborators traveled to Hong Kong to staff a “MOOC information booth” at an open public market. As most of their fellow students unwinded from a busy semester, Sunny and his friends prepared MOOC information leaflets (of their own design) and handed them out on a Hong Kong university campus.
“Coursera provides a valuable tool for fighting against education inequality in China”, Sunny explained. “As Coursera has changed my life, I want to help others benefit too.”
Tianjin University of Science and Technology: We Choose MOOCs
Last fall, a small group of Coursera employees traveled to Shanghai to participate in a Guokr-hosted forum on online learning. Entering the forum venue well before the program’s start, the Coursera team was surprised to find the first rows of the auditorium already filled by a group of nearly identically-clad students. On each student’s t-shirt were the (English) words: “MOOCs is Most Of Us Only Choose.”
The students, we learned, had arrived early to the event after spending the previous twelve hours an overnight train from their home university in Tianjin—1000 miles to the north. Many of them had invested half a month’s spending money in attending the event.
Tianjin University of Science and Technology’s MOOC Association is passionate about online learning which includes more than 300 members, hosts over 20 study groups, and holds weekly meetings to discuss courses and share notes. The group has even attracted official university funding and support.
“Our goal is to help more people benefit from MOOCs,” the association’s founder told Coursera. “This isn’t easy at first, but when people get together to study, life gets more interesting.”

Mon, April 27, 2015: DoubleTake
Mon, April 27, 2015: Today's free Amazon android app of the day is: DoubleTake!
Application Description:
Enjoy fun graphics in 4 game modes
DoubleTake is a chilled-out yet frantic pair-matching game based on the classic card game Memory. DoubleTake features shiny graphics, soothing sounds and music, and four different game modes for every skill level. Train your brain or just relax and enjoy the pretty colors.
Four Ways to Test Your Memory
The four game modes give you a wide variety of matching games. Sprint mode is a super-fast game; you get only one minute to match as many pairs as you can. Your score is based on speed. Timed mode is a little less frantic, but you still have a time limit. When you make matches, you restore your time to the time limit.
Survival mode is more relaxing as there is no time limit, but it's still a challenge. Your health meter depends on accuracy; you lose health points for mismatches, and gain health for fresh matches. Basic mode is the most relaxed mode. Simply match the entire board without penalties for mismatches. Try for the best time and the fewest number of moves.
Build combos for higher scores, and take advantage of the cool power-ups in Survival and Timed modes. DoubleTake improves your memory skills while relaxing your brain.

Sun, April 26, 2015: Router
Sun, April 26, 2015: Today's free Amazon android app of the day is: Router!
Application Description:
Test your mental might with Router, a circuit puzzle game that's fun for the whole family. Your goal is to connect identically colored points with continuous lines without any of the lines overlapping each other. Game controls are easy to master, but some of the puzzles will have you quite perplexed until you find the right solution to connect the dots. With multiple challenging chapters to solve and engaging game-play features, Router is a winner for puzzle lovers.
Puzzle-solving, brain-teasing entertainment
Nine Challenging Chapters
Router features nine different chapters, each full of more than a dozen puzzles that increase in difficulty as you progress. In each puzzle, you will connect the similarly colored dots with continuous lines by tracing your finger on the screen. More advanced levels will present you with more dots in new and unique positions. You will earn more points for making shorter connections. An undo button is provided if you make a mistake.
As you would expect, Chapter 1 starts off easy enough, but the difficulty soon picks up. Each subsequent chapter will require increased intellectual dexterity. Once you hit Chapter 3, you will be required to earn enough points in prior chapters to unlock more.
Earn Bonus Points; Get Hints
If your mental acuity is up to the task, you'll be able to solve each puzzle with a perfect five-star score. For your efforts, you will be rewarded with a Star Point, which you can spend to gain Hints if you find yourself stuck in subsequent puzzles. With a worldwide leaderboard, you can see how your scores stack up with other players from around the globe.
Electrifying Graphics and Smooth Controls
Router brings you hours of brain-teasing fun along with smooth touch controls, which makes for a completely satisfying puzzling experience. Depending on your device, you can adjust the quality of the graphics as well as the sound volume and other game settings to ensure it suits your preferences.
What are you waiting for? Get puzzling!

Course Spotlight: Programming for Everybody (Python)
|
Course Spotlight Series: Programming for Everybody (Python) starts on June 1, led by Professor Charles Severance (“Dr. Chuck”) of the University of Michigan. This article, based on an interview with the instructor, was written by Charlie Chung of Class Central. |
Dr. Chuck is a big advocate for digital literacy and thinks everyone should learn basic programming and understand the history of the internet. This will give people to have the tools to understand a wide range of technologies and value our digital freedoms. And, more concretely, being technologically literate is important for jobs: “I believe that the number of middle class jobs that don’t have any aspect of technology is going to go to zero.” So it is Dr. Chuck’s mission to do his part to help teach as many people as possible (ideally everybody) about programming. “We are reaching people who have always felt that they are shut out of the technology economy,” he says. After all, the internet was not designed to be a technological marvel, it was meant to be a way for people to communicate with each other. People can register to vote online, which takes five minutes, or by visiting their local electoral registration office

Sony announces Xperia Z4 in Japan with little fanfare, few new features
Sony still hasn't shut down or sold its mobile division, as recently rumored, but its phone events are definitely getting less glamourous. On Monday, the company announced a new flagship smartphone, the Xperia Z4, but only in Japan
For comparison, Sony launched its last flagship, the Xperia Z3, at an event during the IFA 2014 conference, held in Sept. 2014 in Berlin. It's possible that Sony plans a separate, global launch for the Z4, but spilling the beans like this will definitely kill much of the anticipation buzz about this model
The phone [link in Japanese] won't make too many heads turn, either. It is a direct successor to the Z3 — with the same 5.2-inch, 1080p screen, 20.7-megapixel camera, and a very similar metallic/glass designThe biggest upgrade is the front camera, which is now a 25mm, wide-angle, 5.1-megapixel one. The phone is also a little slimmer and lighter than the last model — 6.9mm and 144g vs. Z3's 7.3mm and 152g. Read more...
