Coursera Update: A New Name for Verified Certificates

Coursera launched our first premium product—Verified Certificates—more than two years ago. That launch was an exciting first step toward helping our learners showcase the knowledge and skills they were acquiring as a result of their work, and toward becoming a sustainable business. We chose the name “Verified Certificate” to highlight that the certificate could only be earned after a learner verified his or her identity each time they submitted a course assignment.

Starting next week, Verified Certificates will be renamed “Course Certificates.” We wanted to streamline our certificate names, and our research shows that this term is clearer to learners, and to everyone learners might want to share their Coursera certificates with, such as employers, colleagues, and friends. In addition, we’ve started to offer identity verification in many courses for free, realizing all learners and partners should have the expectation of academic integrity in our courses.

Our mission is to become a sustainable company offering everyone in the world access to the world’s best education. Our product will continue to evolve, but our mission will remain the same. Clearly named, recognized, and trusted credentials create value for our learners and for Coursera, helping us move forward in achieving that mission.

FAQ

What will the Course Certificate look like? Is it different from the old Verified Certificate?
The design is exactly the same, except for the change in wording.

What will happen to the Verified Certificates I’ve already earned?
If you’ve already earned a Verified Certificate, it will not change. It will still be called a Verified Certificate. It will count toward Specialization progress, and remain shareable.

Will I be able to share Course Certificates on LinkedIn? Will my already-earned Verified Certificates continue to show up?
Yes, you’ll be able to share Course Certificates on LinkedIn, and continue sharing any previously earned Verified Certificates.

What will happen if I’m in the process of earning a Verified Certificate in a course?
If your course start date was before August 3, 2015, you’ll earn a Verified Certificate. If your course begins after August 3, you’ll earn a Course Certificate. If you started a course on demand (i.e. no start or end date) and finish before August 3, you’ll earn a Verified Certificate; after August 3rd, you’ll earn a Course Certificate.

Pilgrimage I by AlisterBenn

More and more these, days, especially with the power of the internet to send our images around the world in seconds, we see shots from iconic areas more and more. This makes more people want to go there, and we see even more shots. I have no problem with this - as long as the beautiful places are preserved for our kids and grandkids and all the generations to follow in our footsteps when we're gone. As photographers though I think we should try and step beyond pure reportage and attempt to be expressive about the experience we had there. This is the black and white rendition of quite a famous color shot of mine of a tremendous sunrise over Mt Assiniboine. I feel this version is far more timeless and less about the moment and more about the place. I hope you enjoy. via 500px http://ift.tt/1SmxN47

Wed, July 29, 2015: Aces Gin Rummy Pro

Wed, July 29, 2015: Today's free Amazon android app of the day is: Aces Gin Rummy Pro!

Application Description:

Get ready for a card game that makes all other forms of entertainment look like deadwood: Aces® Gin Rummy!

The cards are dealt. You pass on the up-card and draw from the stock. Two melds already and you?ve only drawn once! Sort the high cards down and discard that king. Not much deadwood, but if you knock now, you might get undercut. It?s risky either way, but you hang in there, hoping for a spade or a seven.

One more draw...and...GIN!

Cast of Characters

Want to play Gin Rummy against an elegant Victorian skunk? We?ve got you covered. How about a dapper beaver in a collar and waistcoat? You can do that too. With 11 different animated characters to choose from, including a variety of well dressed ladies and gentlemen (and equally well dressed farm animals and robots), our cast of quirky characters will charm the aces out of you.

Gameplay For All Skill Levels

If you?re new to Gin Rummy, don?t worry. The EASY difficulty setting is a great way to ease into the game. If you?re looking for more of a challenge, HARD will have you planning every move and really watching the discards. Whatever your skill level, our adjustable difficulty system has the right setting for you.

Traditional Scoring

Games in Gin Rummy can be customized to be played to 100 (if you?re looking for a quick game), 150, 250 or 300 (if you?d like a game that lasts a bit longer). Scoring follows classic rules with a 100 point bonus for winning, a 20 point bonus for each hand won, and double points for shutting out your opponent!

Wed, July 22, 2015: The Wonder Weeks

Wed, July 22, 2015: Today's free Amazon android app of the day is: The Wonder Weeks!

Application Description:

Won BEST APP EVER 2013 in the category Health & Fitness!

awarded coolest app for moms 2012! sheknows.com

"The Wonder Weeks app can be a lifesaver during those times of wondering what on earth is going on"

The Wonder Weeks worldwide bestselling app is now a (native) Android app! Picking up on the international bestselling book, The Wonder Weeks, and more than 35 years of international scientific research, this app will keep you informed about the (mental) leaps and bounds and the fussy phases of your baby -- any time of day or night.

This app won prizes in several countries as BEST PARENTING APP!

New:

-Add the picture of your child

-Share your babies leaps on your Facebook page

-new design, lots of new features!

Message for the millions of parents already using this app: you have to insert the data on your child again after having updated

Think of it as a portable, at-a-glance version of the leap chart in The Wonder Weeks. Where the book describes in-depth and easy-to-understand terms the incredible developmental changes that all babies go through, the app is the perfect companion element to track your baby?s mental development (during the first 20 months).

By knowing what is going on inside the head of your baby, you can help him to make the leap more easily and stimulate his development. The Wonder Weeks app helps new parents by:

- Showing when your baby makes a leap in his mental development

- What your baby can understand & learn after this mental leap

- What your baby can do after this leap

- What you can do to help your baby

This app is also a handy reminder for new parents when their baby?s brain is changing, or ?leaping,? s/he is making a significant advance in mental development, and with each step forward comes a drastic change in the way your baby sees the world around him. Because these leaps come so quickly, the ?new world? and new abilities can sometimes be scary, and the development can initially manifest in poor sleep, bad appetite, crying, clinging and crankiness ? exhausting and frustrating mom and dad.

International experts on The Wonder Weeks:

?This is a very practical and entertaining window into the baby?s first year and a half. van de Rijt and Plooij have observed and found the vulnerable times in an infant?s development that I independently came to in my book Touchpoints (Perseus Books Group). The authors? observations and practical suggestions are wonderful.?

-T. Berry Brazelton, M.D., professor emeritus, Harvard Medical School

"Anyone who deals with infants and young children will want to read The Wonder Weeks. This book will open parents' eyes to aspects of their children's growth, development, changing behavior, and emotional responsiveness that they might otherwise not notice or find puzzling and distressing."

-Catherine Snow, Ph.D., Shattuck Professor of Education, Harvard Graduate School of Education

With a name like Doodle God, you might think this is a simple doodling app. Wrong! In this game you mix fire, water, earth, air, and more to create storms, build armies, and grow civilizations. The graphics may be simple doodles, but make no bones about it--in this game, you are an almighty god!

Gameplay

"In the beginning there was only Doodle God." This proclamation kicks off your adventure in godhood. The premise of the game is simple: mix the four basic elements to create new ones, then mix those together, and so on. For example, by combining fire and air, you make energy. Mix fire and water and you make... alcohol? Why not--you're a god, after all.

Limitless Possibilities (Well, Almost)

Keep combining because your first assignment is to create more than 100 items (dust, clouds, dolphins, etc.). The full app boasts almost 200 items and concepts, much more than the online game. Your ultimate goal? To forge your own complete world, right down to the insects and mud. Can you do it in less than seven days (or seven hours)? Doodle God dares you to try.

It Can Be Punny

Just to keep it fun, Doodle God throws in relevant quotes and maxims along the way. For example, when you mix water and earth to create a swamp, the app tells you a joke: "What do swearing frogs say? Oh, bull frog!" OK, we said they were fun, not funny.

PLEASE NOTE: This app lets you purchase digital content using actual money. You can configure parental controls for in-app purchases, which will require your Amazon account password or a 4-digit PIN, by going to the Settings menu from within the Amazon Appstore.

Coursera Celebrates 1 Million Learners in China with Alipay Integration

Coursera learners across China can now earn and purchase Coursera Certificates for on demand courses with ease thanks to an integration with Alipay, China’s leading online payment platform. This announcement corresponds with Coursera reaching one million registered learners in China, the online education provider’s largest market outside of the U.S.

“We strive to put learners first, and provide them with the resources they need to be successful in their academic, personal and professional pursuits. We’ve learned that many of our Chinese learners wish to earn Coursera Certificates, which has been challenging due to payment constraints,” said Coursera’s CEO Rick Levin. “Thanks to an integration with Alipay, all learners can now purchase certificates and share their accomplishments publicly, with employers and friends.”

Previously, Chinese learners had to have access to an international credit card in order to pay the fee necessary to earn a Coursera Certificate, which would allow them to share their achievement on resumes and elsewhere publicly. In fact, Coursera heard stories of Chinese learners borrowing credit cards from their friends abroad in order to make the payment.

Now, learners in China, for the first time, can make payments from any account with just a few clicks on desktop or mobile thanks to Alipay, a leading third-party payment platform from Ant Financial Services Group. With more than 400 million registered users and 200 financial partners, Alipay is helping Coursera to extend its full array of learning resources to a population who greatly values learning achievements. According to an upcoming study Coursera and partner universities conducted around learner outcomes, 90 percent of Chinese learners report seeing career benefits after taking online courses.

Coursera is the first open online education provider to reach one million learners in China and there’s no sign of slowing down. Chinese learners can explore more than 120 courses from local and global universities on a wide variety of topics, offered in Chinese or with subtitles. 10 universities in China are offering courses on Coursera, including Peking University, Nanjing University, and HKUST.

Go here to browse all of our courses offered in Chinese.

With Kids Paint, there is no need for messy clean-up or wastepaper baskets overflowing with crumpled drafts. If you make a mistake, you can easily undo step-by-step by pressing the back button of your phone or tablet. If you want to start over altogether, just shake your device and your entire drawing magically disappears.

Photo Fun

You can also draw directly over photos in Kids Paint. Take a picture with your phone's camera and import the image directly to the app using the Search button. Now is the time to find out how you look with a thick green mustache or goofy rabbit ears. Share your creations with friends and family or save them to the album. Kids of all ages will have hours of fun painting, drawing, and doodling with Kids Paint.
