Coursera Launches 14 New Spanish Language Specializations and over 150 Courses

Spanish launch

Coursera is expanding access for Spanish speaking learners today by launching more than 150 new courses, 14 Specializations, and a fully translated mobile app in the language. Both Specializations and courses will be fully translated or subtitled. The new Specializations are designed to help learners master job-relevant skills in areas including business, computer science, and more.

Spanish-speaking countries already represent 11% of Coursera’s global monthly active users and comprise the second-largest community on Coursera after English speakers. In a recent Coursera survey, 92% of Latin Americans who self-identified as motivated by career and educational advancement reported benefits from taking Coursera courses.

“Spanish-speakers demonstrate a great thirst for flexible, unlimited access to the world’s best education,” said Daphne Koller, Coursera’s president and co-founder. “We are confident that the expanded course offerings and mobile experience in Spanish will be a huge step toward changing lives for Spanish speakers in Latin America, Spain and around the world who want to improve their lives and careers through learning.”

The high demand content has been produced from top educational institutions such as University of the Andes (Uniandes) in Colombia, ESADE Business and Law School in Spain, and Arizona State University (ASU)—known in Latin America for its research and English teacher training. In addition, Coursera will be deepening existing partnerships with the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico, the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (PUC), the University of Barcelona (UAB), IE Business School, and IESE Business School in Spain.

Coursera Study Shows Positive Career and Educational Outcomes for Learners

Today, Coursera released the results of a first-ever survey of course completers on Coursera and their self-reported learning outcomes. Researchers at Coursera, University of Pennsylvania and University of Washington wrote a paper analyzing the results from 52,000 respondents that was published in Harvard Business Review.

The survey reveals that the vast majority of learners who complete open online courses are reporting career advancement (72%) or educational advancement (61%). These reported outcomes were considerably greater among learners who cited career or educational advancement as their primary motivation for enrolling in online courses.

Among learners who identified career advancement as a primary motivation, 87% reported career benefits and 33% reported tangible benefits like receiving a pay raise, a promotion, a new job or starting a new business. Among learners who identified educational advancement as a primary motivation, 88% reported educational benefits and 18% reported tangible benefits like receiving credit or fulfilling prerequisites towards an academic degree.

In addition, learners from lower socioeconomic status (SES), emerging economies, and those without a bachelor’s degree were significantly more likely to report benefits, indicating that open online education can open doors to opportunity for learners of all backgrounds, and especially those at a disadvantage.

“We founded Coursera nearly four years ago with a vision toward transforming lives by expanding access to the world’s best education,” said Daphne Koller, Co-Founder and President of Coursera. “With this survey, we are beginning to see the positive impact open online learning already has had on so many people around the globe, and noticeably for those seeking a boost for their careers. What’s more, tangible benefits are reported at an even higher rate among learners from emerging economies, in lower SES brackets and from other non-traditional education backgrounds, signaling that MOOCs are able to help those with great need.”

30+ New Business, Computer Science, and Data Science Specializations Starting September 15

BTS

Over half of Coursera’s learners come to our platform to build practical career skills—especially in high-demand business and technology fields. That’s why the Coursera team and our university partners have come together to bring our learners, hundreds of new courses as part of a comprehensive selection of Specializations in business, computer science, and data science.

Each Specialization is a series of courses taught by world-renowned faculty, designed to support flexible, self-paced learning, with personalized weekly schedules to help learners stay motivated and on track. In addition, the Specializations culminate in a hands-on Capstone Project which learners can add to their resumes or professional portfolios.

In many Specializations, top companies help develop the Capstone Projects and other course content for learners to gain industry relevant skills and stand out to employers. Industry partners for these Specializations include market leaders like Google, Qualcomm, Zillow, Yahoo, IBM, Meteor, Amazon, Splunk, DataCamp, Kongregate, and more.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that by 2020, new jobs in computer science will outnumber qualified applicants by 3.5 to 1.

The world economy is changing fast, and skills in business, computer science, and data science have never been more valuable. Coursera is proud to provide anyone, anywhere with access to the world’s best educators and experts in these fields.
